Here are some ways in which you can prepare them for a stronger future.
1. Coach them to be a Realist:
I feel optimism is overrated. Though pessimism will not get you anywhere, too much optimism takes away the objectivity of thought process. We need to raise our kids as realists and let them see things as they really are. They need to develop an objective perspective towards all aspects of life.
2. Make them Independent.
This cannot be emphasised enough. Our role as parents is to make kids physically, mentally and emotionally independent as early as possible. But, our own unmet emotional needs become an obstacle in this process. Involve them in everything, let them be a part of the decision making, let them make mistakes, stop being overprotective and let them grow into beautiful individuals.
3. Reinforce important qualities like discipline, perseverance and patience.
Stop telling kids that they are special. They are definitely most precious to us parents and have unique abilities, but so is the case with every child. Skill development and enhancement requires discipline, perseverance and patience. There are no short cuts to success. Also, don't forget to remind them that the process of skill development is as important as the success it brings.
4. Prepare them to accept failure.
Someone rightly said, "failure is not the opposite of success. It is a part of success." It is the responsibility of parents to prepare kids for failure. Parents need to make kids understand that it is a part of life and one must not stop trying.
5. All round development.
Nobody can predict with certainty the type of jobs that will exist in future. But, we surely know that future jobs will require variety of skills. Days of rote learning and information gathering are long gone. Parents need to provide kids with oppurtunities and ways to explore and learn all about the world. This will equip them with all the necessary skills, real world experience and flexibility to adapt to the changing systems.
